Now that the Steam Machine has officially been released, we are going to see more and more accessories and faceplates made by the community for this PC. It's exciting to see, and the customization possibilities are unique compared to most other products out there. And now, JSAUX has thrown their hat into the ring and shown off the faceplates they are cooking up for later this year.

JSAUX Steam Machine Faceplates

Previously, JSAUX announced that they were going to be making faceplates for the Steam Machine, and now, they have unveiled the first three that they are working on. Two of them are E-ink faceplates, with one in color and one in black-and-white, and the other is a Color Dot Matrix. And honestly, I love how all of them look.

The one that really strikes me the most is the color E-Ink plate. While the screen is generally smaller, which means that we will most likely not be displaying a lot on it, the overall design looks much more unique. It’s a first face plate. I’ve seen that genuinely changes the way I look at the Steam Machine, moving from just a static one-element plate to a multi-element collage. The button-looking circle in the top right above the vents gives me “old speaker” vibes, while the three buttons underneath the e-ink display scream retro. There’s something about it that just changes how I look at the machine for the better.

And while we have seen the bigger E-ink faceplates already, the Color Dot Matrix is a new one. It looks like an interesting way to display system information, and with a cover that covers most of the faceplate, it gives me a sleek screen that fills the entire top of the device. However, compared to the other two, this one is still in heavy design mode and requires an external power source to plug into. I like the idea, but needing to do any extra setup other than attaching the plate onto the machine might be asking a little too much for widespread adoption. However, the idea is awesome, and I love the look of it.

In a statement given to me, JSAUX mentioned that:

The units shown are functional engineering prototypes created to demonstrate our product concepts. Both the e-ink display UI and the connection method for the dot-matrix display are still under development and may change before launch. Our current target is a Q4 release.

So, we probably won’t be seeing these face plates for the next few months, but they are on the docket, and it’s great to see what the team is cooking up.

Right now, JSAUX is asking for community input over on their Discord server. They wanna know which faceplate we’d want to see first, as well as whether an external power cable would be acceptable for the Matrix. You can head on over to their Discord server and vote for yourself. You can also head on over to their website and subscribe to their Steam Machine page to be kept up-to-date when these are available.
