The idea of playing the entire Metal Gear Solid series on the Steam Deck is a dream I have had for a while, and the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1 was going to be the start of it. I was extremely excited to play, but unfortunately, it looks like two of the key games included have some issues on the Deck, making them nearly impossible to play.

As confirmed from multiple reports, including one from GamingOnLinux, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 both won't launch. Each version will go into the menu, and when the intro ends, the game will quit your library. With how integral these games are to the story, and with Metal Gear Solid 3 being one of the best games in the series, this is quite disheartening to see. There have even been some reports that you could lose your save game for Metal Gear Solid if you quit using the Steam menu instead of doing it in-game.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1 Steam Deck

The ports do seem to have some other issues, like forced 720p lock and no graphical options, so this may be a remaster to stay away from. It is very possible these issues and additions could be patched and fixed by Konami or Valve (with Proton updates), but for now, $59.99 is asking a lot for ports like this. We haven't had a chance to take a look just yet, but we do plan to later today and see if we can get it working.

For now, avoid the Master Collection if you plan on playing primarily on the Steam Deck!
