While the Steam Deck starts us off with Firefox for the default web browser, we can always install another of our choice. For setting up streaming, depending on the service, I have found using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome to be preferred. However, with the latest announcement, it seems there’ll be a new browser to check out, and I am always a fan of more options.

OperaGX Browser Coming to Linux

Yesterday, the web browser Opera GX got Linux support, allowing you to be used on multiple different Linux distros, including Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora. This is a welcome update, considering that this wasn’t supported before. However, Arch isn’t listed as one of the supportive distro, which means we wouldn’t be able to use it on the Steam Deck. Luckily, it seems they have thought of that, and in there follow up announcement, they mention expanding to handhelds. The team is working on a Flatpak version that should work perfectly on the Deck. There aren’t many handheld shipping with Linux, so the fact that they mentioned expanding the handheld with Linux support is a pretty big indicator.

As a browser, it has a good chunk of interesting features. There are built-in RAM and Bandwidth limiters, a free VPN, direct twitch and discord integration, lots of customization options, and even a built-in ad blocker. It feels like the browser has a lot of gaming-specific features, which could be pretty nice, and it looks like you have a lot of control about what data could be collected from you. I haven’t used the browser myself personally, but it’s definitely something I would try when it comes to the Steam Deck.

The team didn’t mention any timeline for when this would release, but since Linux support is already out, it’ll hopefully be soon. Until then, we can check out the browser and its features on the Opera GX website.
