Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is one of the few games I have played that have dedicated developers consistently working on the game, even though it was released over 5 years ago. Now, with the release of Vermintide 2's new DLC, the Necromancer career for Sienna Fuegonasus, there have been more updates to make it more playable on the Steam Deck!

Optimization was a big part of Vermintide 2's 5.1.0 patch that was released today. First, the team at Fatshark added FSR 2.2 support! This is wonderful and should help even further with stability and playing at a higher framerate with decent quality. It is only available in the DirectX 12 version of the game, but it should help when playing the game on lower-end hardware. The game also consumes less RAM now, so any devices with more limited RAM, like the Steam Deck, should see some stability improvements.

There was also a massive restructuring in the game and the way assets are stored, which resulted in a massive install size decrease! Instead of it needing a whopping 100gb of space, now you will only need 58.87gb! This is almost a 50% reduction in size, making it much more appealing to install on the Deck with its limited internal space. Part of the reason the size was so big in the first place was due to shrinking loading times, but to make this easier, they also changed the loading algorithm, so we should be seeing faster loading times across the board!

The Necromancer DLC

This awesome patch correlates with the new Necromancer DLC that is out now! The add-on brings in a new career for Sienna. These new careers are essentially new classes with different abilities to utilize, and as a Necromancer, you will now be able to summon the dead! As you progress, you will be able to drain essence from the living with your Soulstealer staff, then call upon skeletons to fight by your side! This also means you will be getting a whole new set of perks, skills, and talents to complement the new career.

I had a chance to speak to the developers at Gamescom regarding the DLC, and I liked it a lot. I love the idea of integrating summoning into the game and being able to command others to attack enemies. It isn't something I would expect to see in a game like this, but I am extremely happy they brought it in!

The patch and DLC are available now! The Necromancer career is $3.99, while the game can be purchased on Steam for $29.99. Right now, the game is also 80% off on the Humble store for $5.99 for the next 4 days. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a ton of fun, and I highly recommend getting it, especially at that price.

It does have some issues on the Steam Deck that still need to be addressed. The text size is small in some places, and the anti-cheat stops you from joining games (though you can host). Hopefully, these issues are addressed because otherwise, the game runs quite well on Deck.
