With the flurry of Steam Hardware news this year, with the upcoming Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and the soon-to-be-released Steam Controller, it's no doubt got some people thinking about when we might see a successor to the Steam Deck. Well, the folks over at IGN thought the same thing and asked Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais if he had any more news to share regarding the Steam Deck 2, and the answer was encouraging, but still setting realistic expectations.

Steam Deck Client Beta Update 7/27/22

Pierre-Loup said that "They're hard at work" on the Steam Deck 2, but had nothing to say about when the device might launch. IGN also alluded to their interview with Pierre-Loup last year, where he mentioned that the current hardware components that exist don't meet the standard that Valve would like the Steam Deck 2 to reach in order to make it a meaningful upgrade over the original device. This is almost certainly still the case.

In short, this all means that Valve is most likely focusing on the Steam Machine and Steam Frame for the time being, bringing in improvements to the software side of things like Proton (especially ARM support) and SteamOS, with these improvements benefiting the Steam Deck 2 later down the line. Things are likely at a standstill with regard to the Steam Deck 2's hardware due to no components on the market meeting Valve's requirements as of yet.

It's kind of the answer we expected, but it's good to know that the Steam Deck 2 is still part of Valve's hardware plans.
