World's Most Powerful Handheld, The GPD WIN 5, Opens Pre-Orders on September 25th

If you haven't heard of the GPD WIN 5 yet, in short, it's touted to be the most powerful handheld gaming console on the market. With its top model featuring a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU paired with the Radeon 8060S GPU, this thing will be a bit of a beast.

GPD has just announced that the Indiegogo campaign for the device will start on September 25th, with shipping estimated to commence in November 2025.

The GPD WIN 5 is an enthusiast-level device through and through. With a proprietary mini SSD compartment, additional accessories to dock the device, and more RAM than all of my hardware combined, this is definitely one for those of you who want top-of-the-line tech.

With that being said, what are the specifications of this beast? Here's a rundown of the key points:

• CPU: AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 or Ryzen AI Max 385
• GPU: AMD Radeon 8060S or Radeon 8050S
• RAM: 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB, shared between CPU and GPU, LPDDR5x @ 8000 MT/s
• Storage: 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB, NVMe M.2 @ PCIe 4.0 speeds, MicroSD Card Slot, External SSD Slot
• Display: 7" 120Hz, 1920x1080, Freesync enabled, LTPS LCD
• Battery: 80Wh, Externally Mounted, Can be Removed when Docked.
• I/O: Features 1x USB4, 1x USB3.2 gen2, 1x USB3.2 gen1 Type-C ports, 1x DC Power Port, Wi-Fi 6E, and BT 5.3
• Software: Pre-Installed with Windows 11, Supports Bazzite

As I said, the GPD WIN 5 is an enthusiast-level device; you pay a pretty penny, but you can't really argue with the power you're getting here. In the benchmarks provided by GPD, the GPU scored close to an RTX 4060 Laptop GPU, and the CPU scored similarly to an Intel i9-14900 desktop CPU.

Of course, some compromises have to be made to get this kind of power out of a handheld. Namely, the battery for this device is mounted externally on the back of the device, rather than internally. No doubt this leaves more room for cooling the powerful APU. If you get the dock, though, you can remove the battery while the device is docked. You can also lay the battery near the device and connect it via a proprietary cable.

GPD obviously doesn't expect demand to be too high for the niche GPD WIN 5, as it seems like there may only be 600 units available during the campaign, and this is being used to generate funds in order to mass-produce the device later on. It appears as though the 128GB of RAM models aren't available in the IGG campaign either.
