We Can Now Make Our Own Steam Machine Companion Cube Case

One of the biggest disappointments among accessories made for the Steam Machine comes from dBrand and their handling of the Portal Companion Cube case. Announced before the release of the Machine, dBrand created a companion cube case to fit around the device, but they never asked for Valve’s permission and had to take the cube off the market. It was disappointing because the cube looked incredible, and it was just weird that the team never thought to ask the IP owners for permission. However, not all hope is lost, and a good Samaritan has made it possible for us to create our own.

Jaron has uploaded files to Printables specifically so we can 3D print our own companion cube cases. Originally brought to our attention by Brad Lynch, Jaron posted about their journey, making the case on Brad’s Discord, and ultimately decided to upload the files so we can make our own. It looks almost identical to the one that dBrand was going to sell, but it has alternative designs, which look quite interesting.

However, assembly is going to be a little bit more intricate. In the description, Jaron listed all of the tools that we will need, including magnets, screws, inserts, and superglue. We’re also going to need a soldering iron, tweezers, and screwdrivers. They also mention the five filaments they use for the 3-D printer to make it look and feel the way that it should. And right underneath that, we have a description of how to assemble the entire case, as well as some videos showing how they did it.

Based on what I can tell, it’s almost identical to the one dBrand what’s going to sell. It makes me very happy to see it, and this way, people who missed out on the dBrand case now have an opportunity to make their own. It won’t be as easy as just purchasing one that’s already built, but at least it’s an option that we have.
