Love it or hate it, Unreal Engine 5 is the powerhouse behind many of the biggest games of recent years, and Epic has just announced that, in collaboration with Valve, it will be adding experimental support for the Steam Frame in Unreal Engine 5.8, the next major revision for the engine.

What does this mean for end users? Well, while the Steam Frame can connect to your PC and play VR games powered by your PC, it's also capable of running some games natively on the headset. No doubt, part of this experimental support is adding the ability for developers to export their games to run natively on the headset.
It likely also includes other features for developers, such as detecting the Steam Frame and its controllers properly when in a development environment, so that games can be tested with the hardware itself.
Needless to say, this is a vital step if Valve wants the Steam Frame to become a competitor to the likes of the Meta Quest 3, which already has a sizable library of games that run directly on the headset.
