The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak is one of my favorite entries in the incredible Trails JRPG series, and it is fantastic to play on the Steam Deck. The game shines on the portable machine, just like all the other titles in the series, but it is a bit harder to run. A memory issue would cause crashes if you played for too long, and it was a bit of a bummer if you forgot to save and lose out on the progress. But with this new update, not only is that possibly fixed, but recording gameplay of your favorite moments will be significantly nicer.

The highlight of this update is the Steam Game Recording Timeline support. Recently, Valve introduced game recording into Steam, and with it, we have a unique timeline feature that can automatically highlight specific events if a game supports it. The developer needs to support this, and it was added in for Trails Through Daybreak! The devs made it so that the timeline will note when you are in battle, in a menu, loading, or playing the game normally, and a timeline description will be derived from the current area's name. It will also automatically mark events like interactions, opening treasure, S-Breaks, starting and ending battles, and more.

While the game recording API support is fantastic, it's the memory improvement that really makes me want to dive back into the game. The new update made caching assets in the GPU memory safer, which should fix some memory-related crashes. This was the biggest issue with the game on Steam Deck, so if this really fixes the crashes, I would consider the game completely and fully playable.
We also made minor improvements, such as the Japanese description of the Shadow Caching option and some reflective materials in the Weston Department Store. The changelog is available via the Steam Community Post.
You can purchase Trails Through Daybreak now on Steam for $59.99. We also reviewed the game and felt it was a perfect fit, except for the memory issue. Hopefully, this update fixes it!
