Xbox has been on a roll lately when it comes to game releases, and The Outer Worlds 2 was a great way to cap off a very eventful month of October. The follow-up to Obsidian's hit has been a ton of fun to play, and while I am excited to keep diving into it, I can say that it is just barely playable on the Steam Deck. It was surprising, given the higher requirements for it, but I was enjoying it on the go. It appears that Valve agrees, since the game now has the Playable badge.

The Outer Worlds 2

The game's Playable badge was given about two days ago, making it known that Valve confirms the game is playable on the Steam Deck. It was close to getting the Verified badge, but it was held back by small in-game text and showing incorrect controller icons. In my time with it so far, I haven't noticed either of these issues, but small text seems more likely of the two.

It's good to take Valve's rating system with a grain of salt. There have been many times where the Verified badge isn't accurately portraying the state of the game, like how Remnant 2 was released with the Verified badge or, most recently, ARK: Survival Ascended got the Verified badge while it still has massive performance drops, even on the lowest settings.

As I mentioned in my impressions, The Outer Worlds 2 is just barely playable. It can stick to 30 FPS in close quarters, inside buildings, and in combat, but it does suffer from some drops when going around the world very fast and in and out of towns. It's definitely still playable, but does have some drops to be aware of.
