Update 1/16/25 - The date for the Special Direct is April 2nd and I read the date backwards. The article has been updated to reflect this correction.

For a long time, the Nintendo Switch's successor has been rumored to be coming soon, and finally, Nintendo has announced it! Today, Nintendo released a new trailer giving the first look for the Switch's successor: The Nintendo Switch 2, and there are some intriguing features that I am loving already just from the teaser they gave:

While the teaser doesn't give us much information, nor any hardware specs, it does confirm a couple of details about it. The Switch 2 will be bigger than the first and have a different color scheme, while still keeping the general form factor. It will also play physical and digital Nintendo Switch titles, with some outliers that will be shared at a later date.

However, the most exciting part of the teaser, for me, is the redesign of the Joycons. Nintendo has changed how the Joycons click on the device, and doing so allows the extra shoulder buttons of individual Joycons to be attached to them instead of an accessory you need to attach. As someone who constantly misplaced those accessories, I love it. There's also a new, more pronounced button to detach the Joycons and what looks to be slightly more pronounced buttons on them.

It also looks like there will be a second USB-C port that is on the top of the Switch 2, which could lead to using some third-party accessories, and a redesigned kickstand that can lower the Switch 2 screen to almost horizontal on a surface.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to release this year, and a longer, more in-depth look at it will come with a Nintendo Direct presentation on April 2nd. I am extremely excited to hear more about the device, and am extremely excited for the presentation in 3 weeks.
