Selaco might seem like a simple game, but that couldn't be anything further from the truth. The team is using the GZDoom engine to make the game, which is a giant undertaking due to all the features they are piling into the game. Yet, they did it, and the game is absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, getting the Steam Deck Verified badge wasn't in the cards at launch, and even if it was already running quite well (which we confirmed in our review), there were a few oddities that stopped it from getting the green checkmark. Well, now it is fixed, and I couldn't be happier!

Selaco 3

Last week or so, the official Selaco Twitter/X account posted a thread about the game being playable on the Steam Deck and went into a little detail as to why it was still rated Unsupported at the time. They explain that due to an oversight, disabling "Fullscreen" mode would cause the game to go into a permanent black screen that would need a hard reset to default settings to fix. This was a pretty big issue, and while it wasn't one most people were encountering, it's still scary if it does happen. So, with the issue now fixed, the game was resubmitted for Steam Deck Verification, and here we are today!

On top of that, the developers teased their upcoming updates and what we can expect moving forward. In the next update, we can expect:

  • Backpack Reloading
  • Improved Immersion and Interactivity - New visual and audio effects
  • Weapon Rebalancing
  • Stagger Improvements
  • Performance Improvements
  • Quality of Life Improvements - New map icons and better grenade-throwing
  • And more...

That update already sounds awesome, but the developers decided to go even further and tell us a bit about what we can expect later this year and beyond. So, even further ahead, we can expect:

  • Story Content - Major voice-over pass to flesh out the story
  • Randomizer Mode - Replayable mode with weapon rarity systems and everything randomized
  • Improved Enemy Tactics - Different patrol modes, cover system, and AI overhaul
  • Customizable Mutators For Playthroughs
  • Improved Safe Rooms
  • And more...

In the end, getting a look at what is coming up is always a treat and just makes me even more excited to get back into the game when these updates are released. A great job to the team, and a special thank you to Cockatrice for their work on implementing the features and fixes needed to get that green checkmark.
