HELLDIVERS 2 remains one of the best co-op experiences two years after its release. It’s an extremely fun third-person shooter that balances over-the-top chaos with action-packed combat. And doing it all with friends makes the experience even sweeter. By itself, it makes sense why the game has consistently made the list of the top 20 games played on the Steam Deck each month. However, when it comes to performance, it’s not the greatest to play on the go. But the game is getting a new update on May 27th that may not only make the game look better on the Steam Deck, but also perform better.

In collaboration with Nixxes Software, the PC porting studio from PlayStation, HELLDIVERS 2 is getting an optimization update that will include new support and settings that could heavily improve the experience on the Steam Deck. The game is finally getting upscaling support, bringing in FSR 3/4, XeSS 3.0, and DLSS 4.5. And for us on the Steam Deck, FSR 3 could make the game look better while saving on some performance. The game already has some render scale options with its “Steam Deck” preset, but it makes the game look ugly if you turn it down. FSR 3 could give us a middle ground to keep the game looking nice and save on framerate.
We are also getting support for Dynamic Resolution Scaling, which could help maintain a stable frame rate in more graphically demanding scenarios. This is perfect for when fights get extremely busy, and the resolution needs to adjust to keep us at a solid 30 FPS. If we can utilize both technologies, we may be able to get a stable framerate during the busiest fights in the game, while also keeping the visuals looking better. We are also getting support for Variable Rate Shading, which may decrease GPU load by reducing shading rates in certain areas where you’re looking.
This is a great update to come out of nowhere, and it sounds like developer Arrowhead Game Studios isn’t stopping there. They are going to be monitoring all platforms and hardware configurations to further adjust, and they are preparing a dedicated tech-focused update to push optimization even further. It sounds like they are going to be doing everything they can to make this game run as smoothly as possible, and that’s only going to benefit us on the Steam Deck.

HELLDIVERS 2 can be purchased for $39.99 on Steam, and is rated Playable due to small in-game text.
