Epic Games Store Will Support Linux "Soon"

Up until now, the only way we could use most storefronts outside of Steam on the Steam Deck was by using a community-made tool or launcher with Proton. For the Epic Games Store and GOG, this usually meant using the Heroic Launcher. However, that is changing, since GOG is still in the process of creating a native Linux version of their storefront. And it sounds like Epic is doing the same.

Over on the Epic Games Store community Discord server, Epic hosted an AMA where someone asked about Linux support. In response, Epic Staff member @onepercentnachos mentioned that it was coming soon, but not in the upcoming preview build, since it requires more work than just having a dedicated Linux build.

This is extremely exciting news. Having a native Linux launcher could not only make it run smoother, but also make it more accessible to access all those weekly free games that we keep redeeming to our libraries on Steam Deck. It also paves the way for possible support for other Epic games, including Fortnite, though I wouldn’t say it’s a guarantee.

Still, having more support for Linux is never a bad thing. I can see a lot of benefits, having the storefront natively on the Linux OS, the time will tell when this comes. In the meantime, I’ll keep hoping for more support and Epic opening up their anti-cheat for some of their most popular games so we can play them more easily on the go.
