The Companion Cube case was provided by dBrand. Thank you!

I couldn’t be more excited for the Steam Machine, and there’s a lot of reason to be getting pumped up for it. However, one of the first things I really loved about the Steam Machine was actually a skin that was announced by dBrand. It turns the machine into a Companion Cube, and earlier today, sales for it officially went live.

On the website, two versions are available for purchase: the Companion Cube and the Poverty Cube. The more expensive Companion Cube comes with a bunch of extras, including a Test Chamber Diorama, Red Button stand, microfiber cloth, Collector’s Edition box, and an Orange and Blue Steam Controller skin, which is very reminiscent of Portal. The Poverty Cube option only comes with a cube and a brown cardboard box. As for the price, it is a little on the hefty side, with the companion cube coming in at $130 and will ship late July, while the poverty cube is $100 and will ship in October.

As per the website, it uses Polycarbonate and Polyurethane to make up the outside shell, while it also has screws and magnets to allow easy cleaning of the case. And with magnets on the front, it allows us to take off the front panel with ease, allowing us to clean inside relatively easily.

Now, I could just talk about what’s on the website, but I was lucky enough to get a Companion Cube from dBrand, and while I don’t have a Steam Machine yet, I got a chance to check out what comes with the cube case and how the materials actually feel.

It’s bigger than I expected, but it feels very high-quality. It’s tougher than I thought, but very easy to put together. The bottom and back both have holes for the vents and airflow of the machine, and there are pegs on the bottom to allow air to go in through the bottom of the device. And taking the front off and putting it back on is extremely easy to do. Taking off and putting on the portholes at the front is a little bit on the tough side, but it just keeps them sturdy, which I really like.

And because this is the full companion cube, I also got the Steam Controller skin. I love how it looks, and the texture is solid as well. We also have a full front version of the skin, and a separate version that only includes the bottom half. And since it looks like everything is separated, we could just put on the trackpads if that’s all we would want from the skin itself. If it’s perfectly with the Companion Cube, going with the Portal theme.

Seeing the Companion Cube in front of me just gets me very excited, and I can’t wait for the announcement of the Steam Machine. I’ll be looking forward to it, and it will be on my wishlist for me to purchase immediately. As soon as I have it, I’ll put out a full review of the case and how it is to use, but for now, I can say that it looks and feels great.

Until then, you can pre-order one through dBrand's website for $130. It is on the expensive side, but there's no doubt in my mind that this is a quality case.

The dBrand links above are using an affiliate link, which gives us a little back from sales at no extra charge to you. All proceeds go back into SDHQ and its development.
