Valve tends to keep things quiet about how well its hardware is selling; we still don't really know how many Steam Decks are out there, for example. But Ekianjo over at Boiling Steam has done some quick math to estimate how well the Steam Machine might be selling in its opening weeks.

Essentially, the Steam Machine was the 2nd best-selling product on Steam when this data was taken, and by using the algorithm we know Valve uses for its Global Top Sellers chart (which is based on Revenue instead of Units Sold), and comparing that against the product in 1st place (Counter-Strike 2) and the product in 3rd place (Palworld, at the time of writing), we can get a rough estimate of how the Steam Machine is performing.

Ekianjo states that, using historical market data, Counter-Strike 2's revenue is very stable, typically around $19-20m per week, which means we know the Steam Machine has been earning less than $20m per week. While we don't have solid figures for Palworld, historically, 3rd place is usually around the $7-9m revenue per week range.

With these figures, we can build evidence suggesting that the Steam Machine is earning between $10 m and $ 18m per week in revenue. If $10m is the revenue, assuming the lower-priced Steam Machine variant is getting slightly more sales than the higher-priced variant, we would be looking at around 9000 Steam Machines sold. If $18m is the revenue, that figure edges closer to 16000.

Therefore, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume an average figure of around 12,000 Steam Machines being sold per week, with some variation week to week. As you may notice, in the image I just took of the global top sellers, the Steam Machine is now ranked below Palworld, meaning sales have likely dropped since.

Let us know what you think, is selling 12,000 units a week at launch a success for the Steam Machine?
