Recompilated PC ports have become the best way to play and enjoy retro games. It has been awesome seeing the new rec compilations that have been coming out, and with so many of them supporting the Steam Deck, I’ve been very excited. And, from the looks of it, it sounds like we are going to be seeing a lot more PC ports for GameCube, Wii, and even some WiiU games soon. WiiU support is experimental, but the main focus is going to be on GameCube and Wii.
A static recompiler for GameCube, Wii, and WiiU has just gotten its first release into the wild. DolRecomp, created by ExpandionPak, is a complete rewrite of the team’s older GCRecompiler. It will take dumped games and spit them out into code that can be compiled and used on PC natively. It’s very similar to the N64Recomp project, which can take Nintendo 64 games and ultimately get them ready for native PC ports.

Now, this is an early release, and isn’t fully finished just yet. It will only work with CPU, so the person using it will need to supply their own runtime and graphics renderer. This is a lot of work, so we may not see a bunch of new ports coming in just yet, but the team will be working on their own runtime and renderer to create a complete package similar to N64Recomp and RT64.
On top of that, they are aiming for similar features to the N64Recomp, which will include higher framerate support, higher resolution support, more aspect ratio support, mod support, and more. It sounds like they want to create a similar feature set for GameCube and Wii games, and you will not hear me complain.
They also plan on introducing Linux support down the line, and would love to see it running on handhelds once everything is out. They plan to support all major graphics APIs, like Vulkan, so they believe making a Steam Deck or Linux build of the PC Ports won’t be too difficult.
Instead of updating their old GCRecompiler, the team decided to start fresh and rewrite it completely into DolRecomp. This was due to GCRecompiler being a complete mess, so the team decided to just start again. This is technically the second rewrite, because the first version of DolRecomp got messy again. But, with this version, they feel confident bringing it out to the public.
And the team did confirm that there is no AI code that was used at all in making this project. It was completely written by hand. I wouldn’t say this was a make-or-break deal for me, but it does add a big chunk of confidence in the project.

It’s only a matter of time, but I can see this being the start of more GameCube and Wii PC ports that will enhance how we play the classic games we remember in love. I already felt it with Twilight Princess (using Dusklight), and I can’t wait to relive some of the classics I grew up with. I’m ready for a recompilation of One Piece: Grand Adventure!
