The upcoming voxel RPG Hytale has had a couple of ups and downs, but it seems to be going very strong now. The game was on ice for a short time with the previous publisher, Riot Games, but the original developer, Hypixel, acquired the rights back, effectively saving the game from never being released. This whole thing happened last year, and since then, it has been full steam ahead to its release date of January 13th. It looks fantastic so far, and I’m extremely excited for the release, and for those who want to play on the Steam Deck, we have good news.

Hytale

Over on Twitter/X, the co-founder of Hypixel, Kevin Carstens (@Slikey), posted about Linux support for the game. In it, he goes on to say that the game will have native Linux support and be delivered via Flatpak, which means it should be easily installable on the Steam Deck. He mentions that the Linux support should be considered experimental, but they have team members working on it, so support should gradually improve and get better.

A little further down, he also specifically mentions testing on the Steam Deck. He says that it was quite playable in local single player and works well when docked with a keyboard and mouse. There’s no controller support currently, so the Deck isn’t officially recommended, but it will be playable to some degree at launch. There’s no plan to test Proton compatibility, since they support Linux natively, and any issues will need to be reported so they can work on supporting the multitude of distros that encompass the Linux OS. Multiplayer should also work on the Steam Deck and Linux since the game doesn’t use kernel-level anti-cheat.

I am looking forward to trying it out on Deck as well and seeing if we can use Steam Input to create a good controller configuration for Hytale to tide us over until real controller support comes. It looks like it’ll be a fantastic experience, and I can’t wait to see how it’ll play on the go.

Hytale will be releasing into early access on January 13th. It won't be released on Steam, but it should be installable via Desktop mode and added to Steam as a non-Steam game.
