Of all the games coming out in September, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the one I am most excited for. The gorgeous visuals, the incredible combat, and the intriguing story captivated me. It only got better the more I tried it out, whether that be the demo that was released on Steam or the extended demo I got to try at Summer Game Fest. I am hooked, and it looks like Valve is saying it should be good to play on the Steam Deck as well.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Earlier today, the game got the Steam Deck Playable rating, noting that it should be relatively good to play on the Steam Deck, but with one or two issues. In this case, the text in-game may be a little on the small side. However, the default configuration for graphics and controllers should work, and it should show all the correct controller icons. It also knows that the game's first-time setup does need an Internet connection.

This comes right on the heels of the announcement that actually pushed up the release date by a few weeks, with the game now releasing on September 3rd. This is great because there were so many games released the week of September 24th, and now they’re a little bit more spread out through the month.

I’m definitely on the optimistic side for Onimusha, but there is still a little bit more up in the air for it. It is using the wonderful RE Engine, which is fantastic for games that aren’t open-world, like Resident Evil. However, the minimum spec requirements are on the high side, and it seems that this is aiming for 30 FPS and 1080p resolution, which is higher than what we would aim for on the Deck’s 800p-resolution screen. These estimates were also made using FSR 3.1 upscaling. It’s also going to be using Denuvo Anti-Tamper DRM, which might bring down performance a little bit.

Still, I want to remain hopeful. The demo that’s available on Steam may not be indicative of the final performance, but all I did was solidify just how great this gate would be to take on the go. I’m really hoping that it is optimized well, and with it using FSR 3.1, we should be able to inject FSR 4 to make it look even better. This may come at the cost of some performance, but if we have enough headway, it will make the game look significantly better.
