Even though I wouldn’t consider it the greatest experience, HELLDIVERS 2 remains one of the most played games on the Steam Deck. It’s a ton of fun, full of action, and just a great time. Unfortunately, the latest update for the game has made it impossible to play on the go, resulting in an error that completely stops launching. Thankfully, this isn’t an issue anymore because Valve is on the case.

To make sure we can continue playing on Steam Deck, Valve has updated its Proton Hotfix compatibility layer branch with a fix for the game. This was announced and confirmed by Valve coder Pierre-Loup Griffais over on Bluesky. So, this effectively means that as long as we use this branch, we should be able to play it without issue again.

A Proton Hotfix has been deployed to address the launch failure with Helldivers 2.

The default layer for the game has been updated to the Proton Hotfix branch as well, so there isn’t anything you need to do on your end other than make sure you’re not forcing any specific compatibility layer. There were reports that Proton Experimental Bleeding Edge could work too, but that’s not needed anymore. So, while the new update broke it, Valve has quickly pushed out a fix to make sure it’s something we don’t have to worry about anymore.

HELLDIVERS 2 can be purchased on Steam for $39.99 and is rated Steam Deck Playable due to small in-game text.
