With the release of the Steam Machine, SteamOS has officially been greenlit to be installed on other devices. There are some restrictions, and it lacks support for parts outside of AMD, but there is a good chunk of support for a multitude of handheld and desktop computers with AMD hardware. It was only a matter of time before we would see devices start shipping with the OS, and now, we have the first one that we’ve seen so far.

The Steamroller is a new desktop PC created by MetaPC that is going to be shipping with SteamOS. It is a little bit more expensive at $1,300, but it should be a bit more powerful than the Steam Machine. It uses a desktop RX 7600 GPU, Ryzen 5 9600X CPU, and has 16GB DDR5-5200 RAM. It also comes with 1TB SSD and a 650W PSU inside of a more compact Mini/Micro ATX case.
So, this will most likely be a little bit more powerful than the Steam Machine, but it does come with some compromises. It is going to be bigger, most likely louder, and it is more expensive than the base version of the machine. However, we are getting more power, more storage, and a modular PC, which means we can swap out parts when we want to. It’s much better for future-proofing in case you do want to upgrade later down the road, even if that may be a little bit hard to do as prices for components continue to go up.

Still, I think this is just going to be the first of many PCs that we will see being shipped with SteamOS. The greenlight for SteamOS to go on other devices is the biggest announcement to come from the Steam Machine, and I think it’s awesome that we are going to see more and more of these start to come out and give us options and alternatives for ways to create a PC ecosystem around the house.
