There's no doubt that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is an incredible JRPG, and it's awesome being able to play it on the Steam Deck. I had my reservations initially about turning Final Fantasy 7 into a three-part remake trilogy, but those fears have all but gone away since I love the way Square Enix has expanded the world, characters, and lore. It is playable on the Steam Deck as well, even if it isn't the best way to play, but it did get a fix in the latest update.

In the new 1.001 patch, Square Enix fixed the graphics preset to make sure it is set to low when first launching on the Steam Deck, even if you are using save data that came from the cloud. The settings will be applied regardless, ensuring you have the best settings to play the game. In my review, I do agree that this low preset is the best way to play, since Rebirth needs all the power it can get, especially in crowded cities like Kalm and Junon.
The rest of the update provides a couple of general fixes here and there. If you are playing on a Desktop PC with an NVIDIA GPU, the default Anti-Aliasing method is now set to DLSS and DirectStorage has been updated to the latest version. There's also been improved game stability and some bug fixes, but there are no details as to what exactly has been fixed here.
You can check out the full changelog for the update via their Steam Community Post.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can be purchased on Steam for $48.99, before it goes back up to $69.99 after February 5th.

The performance on this game is markedly improved as of latest patch with 40s now achievable on open world with 30 being an option with world detail set to medium. Game uses way less ram and is absolutely way less compromised now on the deck with pop in way less prevalent.
