With Xbox getting into the handheld game, it is only a matter of time before PlayStation joins the fray. While they haven’t yet, there have been hints and leaks that have indicated plans to do something with their PS6 release. Rumors have been swirling around its possible specs, a design similar to the Switch 2, and when it could be released. However, nothing has been more certain of this to me than PS5’s new power-saving feature, and a new game has just added support for it.

Days Gone Remastered Power Saver Mode

Yesterday, Days Gone Remastered got an extremely small update on PS5, adding support for the power-saver feature of the console. This means that, when the feature is turned on, the game will drop its performance to help the console save on its power draw. It’s a targeted update that only adds support for power-saver, and follows Demon Souls, who has also recently added support for the feature.

So why could this indicate possible PS6 handheld support? Well, there is one big reason I feel it could: Any handheld device will use less power than a stationary console that is consistently plugged into an outlet. It feels like this entire feature for the PS5 was geared towards getting games ready for the release of a handheld, so they can launch out of the gate with many games that already support it.

Even if that isn’t the primary focus of the feature, it’s still a very coincidental connection that could help PlayStation create its own console-to-handheld ecosystem. They experimented with some features with the PS Vita, like purchasing 1 game and getting a PS3 and PS Vita copy of it, so seeing them do something similar utilizing this power-saver feature makes sense.

Ultimately, it’s pretty up in the air right now, since PlayStation hasn’t confirmed anything, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more PS5 games get support in the next year leading up to an official announcement. This could even be hinting at some compatibility modes with other handhelds, like the Steam Deck, if/when these games release on PC. Supporting low power could have a lot of benefits, though time will tell if it makes a difference.

Still, I would say the outlook is bright, and I can’t wait to see what game will be next. Currently, we have Days Gone, Death Stranding 2, Demon Souls, and Ghost of Yotei all supporting the feature, so it’s only a matter of time before more join the fray.
