The next entry in the Call of Duty franchise is almost here, and I couldn't be more excited. I love the Black Ops series myself, with Black Ops 2 standing out above the rest. I love the environment and seeing some of these older characters return in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and I am looking forward to playing. However, a new blog post was made today reaffirming the release date, preloading requirements, and that it will be supported on the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.

This is actually quite interesting to see, because while Call of Duty has generally been very optimized, this is a brand new version of the game that looks to deliver a pretty gorgeous experience. I expected that it would support for ROG Xbox Ally X with its Z2 Extreme APU, since it has more power, but the post does specify the ROG Xbox Ally, which has an APU with similar power to the Steam Deck.

In the post, they mention that the developers enhanced UI legibility, scaled the screen for smaller displays, and optimized to keep performance smooth without sacrificing image quality. Developer support studio Beenox is also committed to handheld support, and while the Xbox Ally is specifically mentioned, they do say Windows-based handhelds as a whole are supported.

Black Ops 7 ships fully tuned for supported PC handhelds, including the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. The developers enhanced UI legibility, scaled every screen for smaller displays, and optimized the game to deliver smooth performance without sacrificing image quality. With native control support, it’s easy to drop in and start playing right away.

Beenox is committed to handheld support and pushing quality, performance, and usability. Grab an Xbox Ally or your favorite supported handheld, hit Start, and take your adventure anywhere.

This is pretty awesome to see, and it actually does look good for being playable on the Steam Deck if you have Windows OS installed. The Xbox Ally APU, the Z2A, is very similar to the Deck in power and specs, so if it can play there, it may be playable on the Deck too. For such a big release, this would be very exciting to see.

The blog post also confirms PC support, with tons of graphical options, display optimization for displays of "all shapes and sizes" (including Ultrawide), support for FSR 4 and other upscaling, sub-frame mouse polling for increased precision, and more. They also confirmed that pre-load will begin on November 10th, with launch on November 13th. Interestingly, they do give a timeframe of 3am-10pm PT for Xbox and Playstation, but 9pm PT for Battle.net and Steam. It's a little odd, but not the end of the world.

They also confirmed the spec requirements, and they are actually pretty manageable. They have a specific PC Handheld tab, so it looks like they will have set quality for handhelds, but even the minimum specs are not too bad. Asking for 8GB RAM, a Ryzen 5 1400 CPU, NVIDIA GTX 970 GPU, and 3GB of video memory is well within the Steam Deck's playability range.

If you want to play on the Steam Deck, you will need to have Windows OS installed due to the anti-cheat requirements. Linux and SteamOS are not supported, so you will either have to get Windows or dual-boot.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 can be purchased on Steam for $69.99, and you can get it on Battle.Net and the Xbox store.
