TrimUI has announced the TrimUI Brick Hammer Pro U and Brick Pro. The difference between the two handhelds is stark: one appears to prioritize Android, while the other is positioned more as a traditional Linux handheld, like previous TrimUI devices.

TrimUI recently released the Brick Hammer, a compact portable handheld that excels at emulating retro consoles up to PlayStation 1 with ease. Its metal body makes it a standout choice for anyone looking to enter the retro handheld scene or find a new everyday carry device for light gaming sessions.

Today, the company announced two new devices that suit different needs but share a nearly identical footprint in terms of build quality, screen, and size. The difference comes in processing power, connectivity, and overall OS experience.

Android and Linux are the two main operating systems for retro handhelds. Android handhelds rely on users having familiarity with the OS, as most smartphones today run the same operating system. Linux handhelds aim for quick ease by removing the need to configure emulators or adjust specific settings. They present themselves immediately as usable retro devices, requiring users only to drag and drop their games into the correct folders to get started.

The TrimUI Brick Pro and Brick Hammer Pro U allow customers to pick their preferred starting point and offer the power required to do so. The Pro U is positioned as an Android handheld and uses the stronger SnapDragon G2 Gen 1 that can be found in a similar vertical handheld, the Retroid Pocket Classic. The Brick Pro uses the same Allwinner A133P but now comes in a version with a nearly 4-inch screen, as opposed to its smaller counterpart’s 3.2-inch display.

TrimUI Brick Pro

As TrimUI progressively cements its place in the handheld market, the difference between what makes a device worthwhile lies almost squarely in its ability to meet your immediate needs. For someone looking for an easy way to play PS1 games, a device like the AYN Thor is overkill. But for someone wanting to emulate 3DS games with 1080p texture packs, it may be perfect. With both the Brick Pro and Hammer Pro U, TrimUI claims that regardless of the handheld flavor you need, they are answering your retro handheld calls.
