MANGMI Unveils The Specs For Game Boy-Like AIR Y and AIR Y Pro

Last year, MANGMI came onto the retro handheld scene kicking with its Air X. For under $100, it was packing fantastic specs with a great screen and battery, able to play games up to the GameCube and PS2 eras (with some heavier games not being playable). Still, for the price, it was hard not to see its value and justify it. Now, MANGMI is working on a new handheld. Inspired by the Game Boy, the AIR Y and AIR Y Pro are the next devices to come from the team, and they just announced the specs that will be powering both versions of this device.

Announced over on Twitter/X by the official MANGMI account, the AIR Y and AIR Y Pro specs were revealed, showing some interesting differences between the two models:

There are some pretty obvious differences here, with the extra power of the AIR Y Pro and more RAM and storage space, but there are some other little changes that make me curious.

The AIR Y is going to have similar power to MANGMI's Air X, so we could expect to play some smaller GameCube games on it, as well as most PSP, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and PS1 games. As for the AIR Y Pro, it is using the same chip as the Retroid Pocket 5, so we can expect much more power to be able to play most GameCube and Wii games, a majority of PS2 games, and even some 3DS titles. It's a pretty significant jump, which will make the Pro a great deal for those who want GameCube and PS2 emulation. On top of that, we can see the AIR Y Pro will have at least two versions with more RAM and storage space than the AIR Y.

However, according to the spec sheet, the AIR Y will be using Android 14, while the AIR Y Pro will use Android 13. It's most likely due to the chips being used, but still a little odd to see. The AIR Y Pro will also be able to charge slightly faster, have better WiFi and Bluetooth, have dual stereo speakers instead of one, and weigh slightly more. However, it will have the same 4.2-inch IPS screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio, 5000mAh battery, and ports.

I do have some questions about the AIR Y, but the AIR Y Pro sounds great. The power and form factor could work really well with each other, and I couldn't be more excited. The big thing here is going to be price, and if they can keep it competitive, this could be another big win for MANGMI. I have high hopes and can't wait to try the device out for myself.
