Tides of Tomorrow was one of the big story-driven games coming out this year that I was very excited for, and I was not disappointed. Despite the simplistic gameplay, the narrative is gripping and enjoyable. It does come from the developers behind Road 96, Digixart, so it makes sense. However, its performance on the Steam Deck left a little to be desired. While it was playable, there were many times when the framerate could drop, which was a little jarring. However, the developers seem to be on the case, as they have proven with their newest update.

In the game’s third patch, the team went all in on optimizing for the Steam Deck. They have optimized the graphic profiles, NPCs and visual elements have been optimized, and there have just been some overall improvements for performance and reductions in stutters. And on top of that, text size across the game has been improved for the smaller screen.
So, with this update sounding great, I wanted to test it out and see if it has actually been improved, and I’m happy to say it has. In crowded areas that would normally drop below 30 FPS, we can now sit comfortably above it. This is a huge change and definitely makes the game significantly more enjoyable on the go. I am actually quite surprised they were able to do this, and while it wasn’t ready on lunch, I’m glad it is now.
Visually, it seems a game hasn’t improved much on that front, but it wasn’t horrible before. So, with the performance improvements, I would consider this a significantly more playable game on the Deck. There have also been a ton of improvements across the board with this patch, with a wealth of fixes, more offline save variations, and audio stutters have been improved.

Tides of Tomorrow is on sale for $23.99 until May 7th and is rated Steam Deck Verified.
