There are many things that the Steam Deck has done for me, but one of them was convert me to a Linux lover. Before this, I would use Windows exclusively, and I couldn’t see myself using any other operating system. Now, because of the Steam Deck and SteamOS, Linux is now my preferred OS. Every month, we can see if others feel the same with Valve’s monthly hardware survey, and from the looks of it, it does appear to be growing.

Since July is now over, we can check out the new Steam hardware survey for last month. Looking at it, Windows is still the dominating OS, but Linux has jumped back up to 4%. I still remember when it was at around 2% and sticking there, and it has really made some progress in the last couple of years. It may not seem like a lot, but knowing how much Windows dominates the space, it’s quite wonderful to see. Linux gained 0.32% over the past month, while Windows lost 0.43% and MacOS gained 0.11%.

Looking specifically at Linux, SteamOS usage actually went down a bit. On the contrary, Fedora, Cachy, Bazzite, Ubuntu, and Mint all went up. However, when looking at the individual components, it looks like the Steam Deck hardware is still on top.

Ultimately, I can’t complain too much. It’s great seeing more adoption of Linux in general, and I’m hoping that as that number grows, companies will start to support Linux further. This could mean games where the anti-cheat stops us from playing may no longer be an issue. That is a big hope of mine, but one that I will continue peddling.
