The Godot engine has been picking up a lot of steam, and it’s being used for more and more games they have been getting a lot of attention. This includes recently released Slay the Spire, Koira, Tiny Garden, Halls of Torment, and even Brotato. The free, open-source engine is getting more popular, and with the newest update, it looks like it should be great to use for developing games for the Steam Deck.
Earlier today, Godot 4.7 dropped, and it brings a ton of changes. There’s a monumental amount of changes, but the one I want to focus on is all about VR support. 4.7 has day-1 support for the Steam Frame, which means that people can develop games immediately for the Frame as soon as it releases. There’s also some specific documentation that appeared on Steamworks, going over exactly how to set it up and ultimately build your game to the Frame.

This new VR support isn’t limited to just the Steam Frame either, since the team worked with Google to support Android XR. Both of these will be ready to go as soon as they launch, and I can’t wait.
On top of that, there are a good chunk of other improvements from this update. This includes HDR support, updates and fixes to different plug-ins and the asset store, drying on textures is now easier, you cannot create games entirely on Android, and so much more. It’s a pretty fantastic update, and hopefully, it’ll mean more Steam Frame experiences for us to enjoy.
