It feels like minute after minute, something new is happening. Not long ago, the Steam Machine finally got a price point and release date, which is extremely exciting to see. It is a little more expensive than I would’ve liked, but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and try it for myself when it comes in. However, right after that, we got another huge piece of big news: SteamOS should be ready to install on desktop.

According to a new article from The Verge’s Stevie Bonifield, Valve has officially given the greenlight to install SteamOS on any desktop computers. Throughout the article, Valve’s own Pierre-Loup Griffais has discussed all the improvements I’ve been rolling out to SteamOS, and there’s been a lot of work making it compatible with Intel and AMD setups. Because of that, they feel confident and comfortable letting people install it on desktops. They are still working on Nvidia support, which may not come this year, but it is something they’re still working on.

Griffais mentions that SteamOS in its current setup should offer a “good experience” on console-PC setups. There may be some caveats like a lack of HDMI-CEC support, but the core experience is there as well as the SteamOS graphics driver and shader pre-compilation. He also mentions that the current way to put SteamOS on a desktop is not designed for dual-booting yet, but they are working their way there.
Ultimately, this is still great to hear, despite there being some pros and cons to it. It gives us an option to actually use SteamOS to create our own Steam Machines, though it sounds like it’s going to be best used with the Steam Machine. Still, I am not opposed to having more options.
