While there have been many games released this year so far, and it's a little overwhelming, Samson stood out to me. The more realistic visuals, coupled with the intense action combat and driving, caught my attention. This comes from developer Liquid Swords, and with their past experience from Avalanche Studios (Just Cause series), I was excited to see what they would come up with. However, it looks like it may not be one we will enjoy on the Steam Deck.

Samson

Earlier today, Liquid Swords published the PC specs for Samson, and it's asking for some beefy specifications (when compared to the Steam Deck). At minimum, they are asking for:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-10505 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Nvidia® 1070 GTX 6 GB / AMD Radeon™ RX 5600 6 GB
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Storage: 15 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: This game requires a SSD hard drive

It is nice seeing a small storage space ask, I am used to games being 50GB and above, it's asking for a good chunk of power. Both the processor (CPU) and graphics (GPU) requirements are above what the Deck can usually handle, and it's asking for 16GB RAM. All of this put together may be too much for the Deck to handle.

Now, there are two unknowns that may change this. The minimum specs could be aiming for a higher resolution or framerate than what we'd use on the Deck, which would mean there's some wiggle room for us. There may also be some specific optimizations the team put in to make sure it runs on the Deck. We have reached out to Liquid Swords to ask about any specific optimizations or support for the Steam Deck.

Still, the game looks like a lot of fun. I keep re-watching the trailers, and I am just so excited to get my hands on it and play for myself. It comes out in less than a month, so the wait won't be long!
