Gamescom was filled with new games left and right, and it was pretty incredible to see what studios are cooking up over the next couple of months to a year. However, there was one appointment I had that brought back familiar feelings of last year that actually put me at ease. Back in 2024, I was able to check out Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 at Gamescom, and I was blown away by it. And this year, I got a chance to go back and check out the new DLC, Legacy of the Forge, and see what this adds to the game. Initially, I thought it would only add a customizable area for Henry, with some new quests chucked in. However, as my appointment began and the enthusiastic Tobi finished his presentation, I knew this was bigger than I thought.

The Legacy of the Forge DLC puts you back into Henry’s shoes as he works to rebuild the forge that his father once owned. He will have to sink his blood, sweat, tears, and hard-earned Groschen into bringing it back to its former glory, all with the goal of fixing the broken clock tower. Along the way, we will meet old friends of Henry’s father and new friends alike to bring the legendary forge back to life.
In general, it’s very hard to sell me on DLC, since I am usually in the camp of believers that most DLC feels like it should have been part of the base game. However, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is packed with content, and the Legacy of the Forge adds some significant features that I genuinely believe are worth it.
One of the standout features of this is being able to rebuild and customize the forge. This can essentially act like a customizable home/base, which is awesome. We can sink our Gorschen into three areas specifically: The Forge, the bedroom, and the backyard. The Forge and bedroom have some great options, and while some are purely aesthetic, there are options that can provide passive buffs and enhance our gameplay. As for the backyard, we can actually add new modules to bring most crafting to one place. For example, we can create an Alchemy wing outside, so we can just go right to the backyard to brew instead of traveling around.

There’s also a module for Armorsmithing, but with Henry specializing in weapons, we can’t directly access it. That’s where old friends and new allies come in. We can bring in and hire an Armorsmith to work for us, giving us the ability to request new armor to be made with materials we find. I have always loved KCD and how it sticks to realism as much as it can. To me, this is another example of that. Henry isn’t a master of all trades, so we will have to bring others in to utilize the features of our fully tricked-out forge.
As someone who has played and saved up a lot of Groschen, you may be thinking that you can just skate through and buy all the upgrades you want immediately, right? Well, not quite. You will need a hefty amount of Groschen, but upgrades are unlocked as you increase your prestige level. To do this, we will have to take on randomized quests that pop up every day in Kuttenberg. There are different types, ranging from the more obvious forging requests to gambling or having to play dentist and pull out some teeth by beating the shit out of them. Good times, really.
I love this system. If we only had to use Groschen, it would feel too easy. But locking upgrades behind this prestige system with new quests that generate daily is just fantastic. If you finish your quests, all you have to do is sleep in-game and wait as they come back the next day. I appreciate the consistent flow of quests to undertake that make it feel like we are making ample progress towards new, better, and cooler-looking customization options and usable modules.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t play much more of it after that point, but I can happily say the Legacy of the Forge DLC contains much more than I expected. It’s clear that developer Warhorse Studios is going above and beyond, while learning from past mistakes to make this new chunk of gameplay worth your time. As someone who loves KCD2, I can say that it very much is, and I can’t wait to knock out someone's teeth again in the comfort of my own home.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Legacy of the Forge DLC will be available later today and should cost $13.99 on its own. It is also part of the expansion pass, which is on sale for $22.49 until September 15th and includes the Brushes With Death questline and the Mysteria Ecclesiae questline coming later this year.
If you don't have the base game yet, it's on sale for $41.99 on Steam until September 15th. It is rated Playable due to small in-game text and incorrect controller icons. You can also check out our review for the game, which notes how well it plays on Steam Deck, given its scale.
