I have been enamored with HITMAN recently, which makes me so excited for IO Interactive’s upcoming 007 game. 007 First Light is an interesting idea, telling an original story about how James Bond started his agent tenure instead of dropping an already hardened Bond into a familiar mission. It looks like a gorgeous adventure packed with action, and yesterday, the system specifications for the game were revealed, giving us a chance to see if the game will be theoretically playable on the Steam Deck.

According to their newly posted minimum specifications, the game will require a hefty computer. They are asking for:

007 First Light Specs Sheet

CPU: Intel Core i5 9500K, AMD Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1660, AMD RX 5700
RAM: 16GB
VRAM: 8GB
Storage: 80GB

Now, this isn’t a ton to ask for, but it’s definitely on the cusp of unplayable on the Steam Deck. The RAM requirements are a little on the high side, asking for 8GB of dedicated VRAM alongside 16GB RAM, but I’d be more concerned about the CPU requirement here. The Ryzen 5 3600 is a pretty high requirement that beats out what the Deck is capable of most of the time. This could lead to some CPU bottlenecks that might keep us from fully enjoying the game at a stable framerate.

I would be more worried about the GPU requirement; the GTX 1660 is a little more than the Deck can handle, but with enough compromises, it could maintain a playable framerate. The minimum requirements are also targeting 1080p and 30 FPS, so we may have some extra wiggle room as our native resolution on the Deck is lower (720p or 800p).

However, there is still some hope if IO Interactive optimizes well. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has similar CPU requirements with much higher GPU requirements, and it is playable on the Steam Deck (although the minimum is aiming for 1080p with 60 FPS). But there are also games with lower requirements, like Black Myth: Wukong, that don't run as well. It's all going to come down to optimization, and I do have some worries on that.

The recommended PC specs for 1080p and 60 FPS are pretty high. The CPU requirement isn't as bad, but an RTX 3060 TI and 32GB RAM + 12GB VRAM is a bit much. I could understand if this is for 1440p at 60 FPS, but just going from 30 to 60 FPS at 1080p shows some pretty staggering increases that are being asked. The only other unknown is if upscaling is being taken into account. I don't believe it is, which would make it better, but it will be tough if it's included here.

I want to remain optimistic here, especially since HITMAN runs so well on the Deck while looking incredible. 007 First Light looks like such a fun game, so I am hoping for the best. It will most likely need big compromises on Deck, but with upscaling involved, I will keep an open mind and look forward to playing it on the go.

007 First Light can be pre-purchased for $69.99 on Steam.
