Valve Reconfirms the Steam Deck 2 is Planned, but Hardware Still Not There Yet

It's something we've heard Valve engineers say a few times now, but in a recent interview with IGN, Pierre-Loup Griffais from Valve reiterated that a Steam Deck 2 is planned in the future, but much like they said last year, the current handheld chipsets aren't enough of an improvement over the Steam Deck to warrant a new handheld.

“I would say that the new chips that are coming out are still in power envelopes that are not quite the right segment that you'd want for a true handheld experience”

He then goes on to say that he believes the current generation of "handheld" chips seems like they were made for laptops, and are simply being repurposed for handhelds, rather than the bespoke and optimized handheld chipset found in the Steam Deck, which admittedly still gives it impressive battery life compared to its competitors, I still have to recharge my ROG Ally after an hour of playing Forza Horizon 6.

We shouldn't expect a Steam Deck 2 in the near future, however, as Pierre-Loup said the Valve team's focus right now is on the newly released Steam Machine, and that they would be talking about their next generation of hardware "in the coming years".

Given the current component crisis, I'm not sure we'd even want Valve to release a Steam Deck 2 right now. Hopefully, things will smooth out in the future, and we can get a true (and reasonably priced) successor to the Steam Deck.
