No doubt you've heard of these 2 sites before. SteamDB is the largest database for the Steam platform, hosting metadata on literally hundreds of thousands of games, and is an invaluable source of information for users and journalists alike.

Nexus Mods, likewise, hosts a huge amount of data, but for game modifications; in fact, it's not far off hosting 1 million different mods, some of them being especially useful for Steam Deck users, such as user-developed optimizations for games.

Well, these 2 websites are now joining together, with Nexus Mods taking control of the SteamDB website.

What will this mean for the 2 websites? Well, Nexus Mods put out a news post to detail exactly what they hope to achieve from this deal. SteamDB also put out a news post and an FAQ.

In short, they want Nexus Mods to use the data gathered by SteamDB so modders can be made aware of game updates that might break mod compatibility, and that Nexus Mods own modloader can potentially check if a mod will break your current version of the game.

What does SteamDB get out of this deal? In short, funding. SteamDB relies on donations, both monetary and of games. Nexus Mods plans to bring in a team of developers to work on the site, as well as start purchasing games not covered/donated on SteamDB so they can build a more comprehensive database.

Nexus Mods have also stressed that while they will look into ways of monetizing SteamDB, they won't be using advertisements or a paywall, and would prefer to use methods such as affiliate links and sponsorships to make the site profitable.

So it sounds like a win-win situation; as of right now, both sites should continue to operate as they were. We'll have to wait and see what the future holds for both sites now that they are working more closely together.
