A Steam Deck Was Turned Into a Game Boy

I have seen many projects where they've redesigned original hardware into new form factors. With the Steam Deck, I have seen it turned into a multitude of different forms, including a clamshell handheld. Now, someone has taken it upon themselves to turn a Steam Deck into a Game Boy, and it’s quite interesting.

Created by user PhyFawkes on Reddit, the “SteamBoy” is essentially a Steam Deck, but in a Game Boy form factor. It uses original parts from the LCD Steam Deck, including the motherboard, battery, speakers, and buttons, all of which fit into the smaller case. However, because of the form factor, there’s a smaller fan and a new screen that are used for it. Ultimately, it does work, which is really cool to see.

It’s still a work in progress, though, so there’s more work to be done. Mainly, the screen on the SteamBoy doesn’t work yet. They speculate that they will most likely need a custom adapter and to modify the BIOS to recognize the screen and use it.

Still, for proof of concept, this is awesome. I love seeing hardware to be taken apart and put into different form factors that would appeal to different people, and as someone who likes the portability of handhelds, this definitely speaks to me. I would be a little worried about cooling, since that small fan might not be enough to play more demanding games this way, but nonetheless, this is great work.
