The Finals is still one of the coolest free-to-play games I have ever seen. The insane amount of destruction in this first-person shooter is paired with top-quality visuals and intriguing ideas that all culminate together nicely. While it is very playable on the Steam Deck, it continuously gets broken and fixed, but from the latest update, it sounds like the developer Embark Studios cares about making sure it remains supported.

The Finals

With this new update, we also got to hear from Chim and Tom from Embark Studios regarding support for the Steam Deck. At the bottom of the post, they acknowledged the community's concern regarding Steam Deck and Linux support due to anti-cheat issues. However, the team is committed to making sure it's compatible and reiterates that Proton and the Steam Deck are important to their development plans, even if native Linux and general Wine support isn't prioritized:

We noticed the concern about Linux following our last update. We’re testing everything across all platforms, and have made it very clear to our partners that Proton and Steam Deck are important to our development plans. While we don’t officially support Steam Deck due to our required dependence on Proton Experimental, we are committed to ensuring compatibility, and we work with external partners to fix issues before we ship a patch. The experience of every player is important to us. Despite many factors, we are still dedicated to supporting it because we know it matters. However, general Wine support is not tested, and native Linux support is not planned.

Chim and Tom - The Finals 7.6 Update Post

This makes me extremely happy to see. The Finals is one of the few games that usually break on the Steam Deck whenever there's a major new update, so I am happy to hear that the team does care about the Deck and wants to make sure we will still be able to play on the go.

The bulk of the update goes over the newest game mode for The Finals: Super Cashball. It's a 5v5 mode that takes place over 10 minutes, taking place in a brand new stadium. As you complete daily contracts, you can spin the Super Cashball Wheel to get themed prizes. The update also brings the new Lotus Reaper Set, balance changes, bug fixes, and more.

The Finals is free to play on Steam and is rated Playable due to needing to manually bring up the virtual keyboard and small in-game text.
