If you are looking at which platform will be the best way to purchase games at discounted costs, Steam is the way to go. As far as I can remember, there is no platform or DRM that has nearly as many sales as Steam does and can show off these sales in an engaging way that encourages spending time looking through them. Daily Deals is one of the ways Steam showcases some of these games and has been my favorite way to check out some new games I may not have heard of, and take advantage of a discounted price.

With how successful it is, Valve decided to expand the feature a bit. This includes some nifty new features for developers, but there is a big one that will benefit gamers looking for new games. So, let's take a look and see what is changing.

Past Daily Deals Statistics

Valve started off its blog post with a look at some past statistics about Daily Deals and how successful they were. Just last year, the program hosted 2,843 games from 1,160 different developers and publishers, coming from 68 different countries around the world. Each game featured usually got over 10 million impressions during the single-day spot, and the revenue range could get anywhere between $10,000 to $2,000,000 (based on variables like game age, discount percentage, interest, and more). 87% of all the games shown last year were also new to Daily Deals in general.

This is pretty amazing if you think about it. Each game usually getting an extra 10 million impressions just from being a Daily Deal is insane. And with sales usually lasting more than just that one day, word could spread and end up resulting in even more sales. It can effectively highlight lesser-known games and put them on the map, and it sounds like this is largely successful.

Expanding to Six Daily Deals Spots

Starting with the part of this update that will benefit gamers, Valve is expanding the Daily Deals to have six daily spots. Last year, Valve expanded the number of spots to four and found it to be beneficial. It allowed Steam to show games based on a user's gameplay and Steam preferences while showing the others that may not be as much of a match, but still showing them and possibly introducing something new that the user may not have seen before.

With this change, Valve can spotlight more games, offer a deeper pool of discounted games to check out, and connect users with the best games for them. With going to four spots having a positive response, it is possible that six will also see a net gain for each of the games spotlighted. I would love to see some lesser-known games get shown more as well, spotlighting some awesome indies that deserve it.

Valve also details that the prioritization algorithm they developed will help connect gamers to the best offers for them. So, when each user looks at the special offers and daily deals, it will be different and individually specified for them.

Promotion Recap With Detailed Reporting and History

For developers and publishers, you can see more detail that comes from Daily Deals. The new post-promotion recap allows you to see just how well your Daily Deal did, giving an idea of the revenue and impressions that came from the one-day spot. There is also a new history section to check out past promotions, which include the revenue and impressions but can also show units, wishlists, and purchases from the wishlists. If a Daily Deal is for more than one game, which is possible for publisher sales, you can look at the individual for each product as well as the overall stats.

And that's about it for the update! For gamers, having more deals and sales to choose from is great, and it sounds like developers and publishers will be able to take advantage of the awesome new tools. These are awesome changes, and I can't wait to see what deals will be coming next!
