Kunitsu-Gami's Demo Gives Me Hope For Steam Deck Playability

When I first played Kunitsu-Gami at Summer Game Fest, I immediately fell in love with the game. The vibrant visual splendor mixed with the engaging tower defense-like gameplay mixed so well for me and it was easily one of my favorite games at the event. And after today's Capcom NEXT showcase, we finally have a public demo that everyone can enjoy. This also means we can try it on the Steam Deck, and after doing so, I am very optimistic about the full game!

I started off the demo, and it defaulted to almost the lowest settings with the image resolution at 70%. This can't hit 60 FPS, unfortunately, but I found that a 40 FPS / 40/80Hz rate was smooth and stable. The game also defaulted to HDR being on, and while it does work, I felt the game was not as vibrant as I remembered. Switching off HDR and turning the color space from sRGB to Rec.709 fixed this for me, and the game looked fantastic.

With no regard for battery life, I was able to increase the image resolution to 80, while keeping everything else the same. Since this is a demo and not a reflection of the full game, I had no intention of trying to optimize it. I wanted to focus more on whether the game will be playable, and I have full confidence that it will! It seems a 40 FPS build with some compromises and a 30 FPS build with higher quality will be possible based on what I have played, but I am sure the full version will be more playable, so it's possible we could have even higher quality than what is possible here.

Of course, the final game will most likely differ from the demo in terms of performance and content, but this does make me feel a lot better about the game and how it will run on Steam Deck when it releases. Either way, from this demo, I would say I have confidence that this will be playable and I can't wait to get it for myself!
