Hyper Gunsport was provided to us by Necrosoft. Thank you!

When Cyberpunk 2077 came out, it re-invigorated my interest in cyberpunk-style games and quickly captured my attention. While it took a little time to get to the enjoyable build that is out now, I was still hoping for more games to go out and capture that excitement I felt seeing the world placed in front of me.

I think it goes without saying that the one thing missing from CP2077, the one thing that could have made it a Game of the Century, was the inclusion of Volleyball. While I might be joking...a little bit...Necrosoft decided to tackle this issue and put their own unique spin on it. Welcome to Hyper Gunsport.

Hyper Gunsport: Volleyball for all the Glory

Hyper Gunsport is exactly that. This 2D pixel-styled game has you pick a team of 2, choose which position you will play, and face against other opponents in this new "extreme" sport. War has been eradicated, gods are not worshiped here, all that is left, is Volleyball. Using specialized guns, your goal is to shoot it into one of the lit up goals on the other side of the net. The points add up the more the ball crosses the net and you get extra for hitting smaller, or harder to hit, goals with the first to hit 60 points winning the match!

The game features a circuit/arcade mode and a versus mode. The circuit mode will have you choose a team and go up against a string of matches to win the circuit. These matches are a 2v2 and you will have the choice of playing the Striker, the person with a weaker gun but can move and jump around your side of the field, or the Keeper, the person who has a stronger gun but can't move from their post. There are also some matches later on that have some augmentations. Versus mode allows you to choose if you'd prefer 1v1 or 2v2, though 1v1 will automatically have you and your opponent as Keepers.

There are 7 teams total, each with specialty guns that separate themselves from each other, and 5 to start out with. They also all have their own specials that augment the guns to become more powerful. This can range from a special laser to make angle shots better, to an extended shotgun blast to make sure the ball is hit, all the way to an assault rifle to pummel the ball into the goal. You can also try to line up and shoot the ball at the same time with your partner, which will add more power to it and fill your special bar. All of this taking place within a vibrant pixel cyberpunk world.

Hyper Gunsport is a small game when compared to others around the same price point, but there is a lot of fun to be had here. It is oddly enjoyable to run around and hit that ball into the goal, way more than I expected, but the big draw here is the multiplayer experience. The game supports up to 4-player local multiplayer in either VS or Coop experiences and it is a blast. Trying to coordinate with my friend as the Keeper to get the ball in the goal or shoot it at the same time was a ton of fun. I don't recall the last time I got loud and yelled at my friend as I was trying to hit the ball in his goal when we tried versus as well. There is unfortunately no online play currently.

While the gameplay is fun and I am enjoying playing the game, I feel it is a little overpriced. $25 is a large ask for a game with this amount of content. $15 could be a better price point, but if you are looking for a new awesome local multiplayer experience, this is a safe bet for a good time. It also feels a little bit off playing on the KB+M when aiming the gun, so I ended up preferring using a gamepad. Luckily, the game runs perfectly on the Steam Deck! Due to how it runs, I would consider this a Best on Deck game too with around 6W drain and sub 55c temps.

I played this on the Steam Deck a couple ways and trying different multiplayer setups. Playing alone worked perfectly fine, but playing multiplayer this way took a few tries to find the best setup. I found the best way was using 2 separate controllers and "docking" the Deck either with a stand or connected to a monitor. I also tried playing with the Deck in my hand and my volleyball partner sitting next to me looking at the screen. This definitely works, but depending on the other person, this could be more on the uncomfortable side.

Overall, I really am enjoying my time with Hyper Gunsport. It is a lot of fun with what it offers, multiplayer is a blast, and it runs so well on the Steam Deck. I do feel that the game is asking for a bit too much money at the $25 price, but if you decide to get it or split it with a friend to play together, there will be little regret. I can definitely see myself playing this game much more at parties or social gatherings if we need a break from my other go-to party games (Jackbox all the way).

Hyper Gunsport can be found on Steam and costs $25. It's definitely worth checking out if you have the time.
