There are some very iconic series that Xbox has, and Gears of War tops that list for me. I still remember playing it for the first time on my Xbox 360 and experiencing the brutal, action-packed story and frantic multiplayer. When Gears of War: Reloaded was announced on PC, I was overwhelmingly excited, and I couldn't wait to dive back into the game. It also sounds like it's going to be a joy to play on the go, since the title just got Steam Deck Verified!

Gears of War: Reloaded

Yesterday, Gears of War: Reloaded got Valve's seal of approval with the Verified badge. This theoretically means the game should be good to play on the go with solid controller support, good default graphical settings, and the text is legible. This rating isn't always accurate, and there are some Verified games that aren't actually great on the go, but I am more optimistic about this one.

In the game's description, there's a paragraph that specifically states how the game is optimized for PC and handhelds. It mentions that it will have great PC support, controller remapping, and upscalers like FSR 3.1 included. It doesn't specifically mention the Deck here, but if they are optimizing for handhelds in general, it should benefit the Deck regardless:

Optimized for PC & Handhelds: In addition to stunning remastered visuals, Gears of War: Reloaded also delivers PC-first features such as ultrawide support, a benchmark mode, variable refresh rate, mouse and keyboard support, FSR3.1 and DLSS3.5 Super Resolution support as well as controller remapping.

This seems to be backed up by their system requirements as well. The CPU (AMD Ryzen 3 (Four-Core) or Intel i5 Skylake), GPU (AMD Radeon RX 480 / RX 5300 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 / 1050 Ti or Intel(R) Arc(TM) A380), and RAM (8 GB RAM) requirements are all well within the Steam Deck's range, though it is asking for a hefty amount of storage space. Still, by this metric, it should be playable on the Deck.

In the end, it's going to be interesting to see how Gears of War will run on the Deck, but I have hope. With Xbox partnering up with ASUS for their own branded handheld, it seems as though the company will be trying to make sure hardware with limited power will be able to enjoy the games they publish, and that should benefit us all!
