One of the best franchises to play through completely on the Steam Deck has been Resident Evil. The entire series, including the new Resident Evil Requiem, has been a blast to enjoy on the go, which is quite surprising, but ever since all the remakes came out, it has highlighted just how great they are to play. Unfortunately, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Resident Evil 4 Remake was released running decently, but in the last month, developer Capcom added a new DRM, Enigma, to the game that negatively impacted performance. However, it looks like they have reversed their decision, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Resident Evil 4's Gold Edition is currently on sale on GreenManGaming for $17.

Resident Evil 4

On the updates page for Resident Evil 4 Remake on SteamDB, we can see that yesterday, Enigma DRM was removed from the game. This can also be confirmed on their Steam store page, where the mention of Enigma is gone, and that is something worth celebrating.

When Enigma was first introduced into the game, it brought down the framerate quite significantly. For whatever reason, the DRM sucked up resources and required more power, which seeped its way into making it harder to run on the Deck. It was still playable, but there were significant drops from the state in which the game was released.

Now, we don't have to worry about those anymore, and I couldn't be more excited. I remember reviewing Resident Evil 4 Remake and enjoying it on the Deck, so when I first saw Enigma being added and drops being recorded, I was a little sad. It's great that we should be able to enjoy it as well as we could when it was released, and I also like celebrating with DRM like this is removed. I understand why it is added, especially to competitive multiplayer titles, but they can bring down performance, which isn't great for single-player experiences. Luckily, that won't be an issue anymore here!
