It's no secret that the Steam Controller works best when you have Steam installed and running on your computer, and has limited functionality if you're not playing on Steam. But a new update to SDL, which is a library that allows hardware and software to interact, could help change that.

While this isn't a "fix-all" solution, as only games and applications that utilize SDL will benefit, it is a step in the right direction. Plenty of smaller applications, such as emulators and open source games like OpenTTD and 0AD, make use of SDL in various ways, so updates like these can definitely add additional functionality to your shiny new controller.
No doubt there are plenty of other projects in the works to improve and expand upon the Steam Controller's functionality that we'll see coming out of the woodwork in the coming weeks and months.
