FSR 4 Support Is Coming To The ROG Ally X And Other Z1 Extreme Handhelds

Today feels like it has been a whirlwind already, but it hasn’t even started. Earlier, we reported on a leaked build of FSR 4 that Valve has added to Proton. Now, following right after, AMD has officially announced that they are releasing FSR 4.1 for RX 7000 GPUs, which they had previously announced they would do. However, they also added in one little interesting tidbit that makes this announcement very interesting.

Announced by Jack Huynh, the Senior Vice President at AMD, on Twitter/X, FSR 4 support will officially be making its way to RDNA 3 APUs, not just the dedicated GPUs. This means that we are going to see specific support for FSR 4 that comes to integrated chips that use RDNA 3 cores. And more specifically, if you’re using any handheld that utilizes a Z1 Extreme APU, like the ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, Legion Go 1, or any handheld that uses a 7840U or 8840U APU, support is coming your way.

Jack mentioned that they are building lightweight machine learning models specifically for this, most likely due to the fact that these APUs don’t take nearly as much power as dedicated GPUs. He doesn’t mention a timeline of when this is going to happen, but getting an official announcement means that these devices are going to be supported with the new AI upscaling technology from AMD.

This also renews hope that when support for FSR 4 comes to RDNA 2, we are going to see a similar effort put in for RDNA 2 APUs. This will not only benefit the Steam Deck, but also the ROG Xbox Ally, which uses a very similar APU to the Steam Deck. There is still time before that happens, since FSR 4 support for RDNA 3 was going to come before, but it still gives some hope.

It’s going to be a very exciting week, because I have a big feeling that we are going to get a lot of information for the upcoming Steam Machine, and this is a big part of it.
