With some speculation and leaks, there has been discussion about ASUS’ next handheld. Ahead of Computex, rumors and an issued license showed that the next Ally would be using the same Z2 Extreme APU that the Xbox Ally X uses, which makes this handheld sound like a refresh over a generational leap. Now, that seems to be the case, because ASUS has unveiled the ROG Ally X20.

ROG Ally X20

This is a special 20th anniversary edition of its handheld, but there are some pretty big changes that have been shown so far. This addition has a transparent shell with gold buttons, and is adopting the same chassis that the Xbox Ally series uses. However, there is also confirmation that the displays are being upgraded to a 7.4-inch OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 1,400 nits. This will be ASUS’ first time using an OLED panel for their models, which is very exciting to see.

On top of that, they have confirmed that it will have 24GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB NVMe storage. They have also redesigned the cooling system to better cool the APU so the screen doesn’t get as hot. It will also have TMR joysticks, a convertible Dpad, and revised face buttons.

However, I am worried about the price. The current Xbox Ally X is going for $1,000, and that uses a standard IPS panel, so upgrading to the OLED will most likely make this more expensive. On top of that, this version of the handheld will only be bundled with their ROG XREAL R1 augmented reality glasses. These are awesome-sounding glasses, but they will be going for $850. So, if these are bundled with an already expensive-sounding handheld, this could mean it will be extremely pricey, possibly going over $2,000.

It will be interesting to see what happens, especially since Intel’s new handheld APU, the Arc G3 Extreme, is showing some major performance increase over the Z2 Extreme. I can’t wait to see these two chips go head-to-head, but if both are going to be relatively expensive, it may be more worthwhile to head towards Intel if you are looking for the most powerful device right now. But as of right now, this ROG Ally X20 sounds like the perfect version of the ROG Ally, packed with an OLED screen, great Dpad, gorgeous design, and bigger display. I just hope the price will be affordable.
