One of the best ways to use the Steam Deck is to play older games. There are multiple ways to do this, with the most common being emulation. However, we have been seeing the rise of decompilated and recompilated retro games, giving them native PC ports with enhanced features that we can take advantage of. There have been some great ones recently, but the most recent being Animal Crossing from the GameCube. However, there was a new recompilation that released for a Nintendo 64 title, and it is fantastic on the Deck.
Before I get into the news, I just want to mention that SteamDeckHQ does not support any form of piracy and will never link to or discuss places where you could get ROMs or download games. We support emulation/recompilation as a form of preservation for older games that are no longer in circulation for consoles that are no longer manufactured.

Two days ago, Bomberman 64 got its own recompilation. Made by user RevoSucks, this recompilation uses the N64: Recompiled project to bring this one to life. This means it is extremely easy to start, has fully intact Nintendo 64 effects, and extra support for higher frame rates, more resolutions and aspect ratios, mod support, near-instant load times, and more. This by far effectively makes it one of the best ways to experience this game, and it’s a joy to play on the Steam Deck.
For whatever reason, the AppImage version crashes whenever you try to load the game, so we have to download the the Linux X64 Release version. From there, just extract the downloaded files into its own folder, and load your legally dumped USA version of the game. It currently does not work with any other version of the game, so it has to be the US version. And after that, just add the executable to Steam and you should be all set.
And of course, the game is full gamepad support, which makes it extremely accessible in game mode. We also have a dedicated menu to change graphical quality, modify controls, change the framerate, and even turn on cheats. We also have an extremely low battery drain on the Steam Deck, sticking to around 6W-7W for over eight hours of battery life on the OLED. This is an extremely old game, so I wouldn’t expect anything different, but it still makes me very happy to see, especially when the 16:10 aspect ratio is properly supported.

If you’re looking for a reason to go back and play the classic Bomberman 64, this will definitely be the best way to do it.
