Co-op Submarine Sim 'Barotrauma' Gets Even More Difficult With its Latest Update

While I haven't played Barotrauma myself, I've seen others play it, and one thing that stood out to me was how difficult it looked, and how quickly things could go wrong. It appears the developers weren't satisfied with their handiwork, and the latest 'Blood in the Water' free update, allows the game to become even harder!

In case you're not familiar with Barotrauma, it's a cooperative submarine simulator where you are tasked with undertaking missions on Europa, a moon of Jupiter. Naturally, it's not all plain sailing and things can go horribly wrong in a variety of ways. Although this update focuses on making the game more difficult, it also makes the difficulty settings more customizable. This is in an effort to make the game more approachable to newer players, but still provide additional challenges for veterans of the game.

Besides the additional difficulty options that are being added, the update adds new content to Barotrauma in the form of two new monsters, on top of that, all monsters now have a more aggressive behavior. There's also an overhaul of the event system, the medical system has been reworked, and many other changes have been made.

Barotrauma is having a 50% off sale on Steam to celebrate the new update, so until May 8th, 2024, the game is available for $17.49, before returning to its usual price of $34.99. The new update itself is available for free to owners of Barotrauma.

Barotrauma doesn't offer controller support but is rated as Playable on the Steam Deck according to Valve's testing, due to small in-game text, sometimes requiring you to invoke the on-screen keyboard, and controller icons aren't correctly shown.
