As a huge fan of Banjo-Kazooie, I was elated when Yooka-Laylee was announced and released. Even if it wasn't perfect, it still gave me that same joy that I previously had. But, I still had fond memories of playing Yooka-Laylee, which made me a little skeptical about the remaster, Yooka-Replaylee. I felt it wasn't necessary yet; the original game was released less than 10 years ago, so a part of me felt it wasn't needed. However, now that there's a demo out, I was able to try it, and it was clear how wrong I was. Visually, it is even more beautiful than I remember, and I am happy to report that it is very playable on the Steam Deck.

Not too long ago, we reported that developer Playtonic would be working on making sure this version of Yooka-Laylee would be optimized for the Steam Deck, and if the demo is anything to go by, it should be quite great to experience on the go.
The demo is relatively short, so we didn't get a chance to roam around and experience a lot of the game, but we did get some cave areas and the outside area with our ship. In every location we were able to test, the game holds a solid 45 FPS, with battery drain ranging from 12W to 20W depending on the camera angle and intensity of the area. There were a few small, quick stutters when spinning into enemies and hitting them, but it quickly evened out as soon as they were dead.

For the most part, the game looked beautiful on the smaller screen as well. The visuals were stunning in a lot of spots, with only a few times I saw some small blurriness and pixelation around Laylee, but this wasn't something I found noticeable when in general gameplay and running around. It was just a treat to see, and it's clear that Playtonic put a lot of work into making sure this would be great on the Steam Deck.
However, there's another reason I believe Playtonic is working to ensure the Steam Deck build is solid: There are no video settings. This usually means that the devs decided on a set of graphical settings, and we wouldn't be able to change them. I decided to try booting the game with the SteamDeck=0 %command% launch option to see for myself, and right there, the Display tab in the settings appeared, so we could change the graphical settings ourselves. From what I could tell, it appears the specific Steam Deck build has a modified High settings preset with some Medium quality settings here and there.

With this being a remastered version of Yooka-Laylee, I also wanted to test and see how the game looks and runs compared to the older game. Yooka-Laylee is beautiful in its own right, so I was curious how the visuals have changed. While Yooka-Laylee is able to run at the highest quality settings and still hit 60 FPS and above, the visuals for Yooka-Replaylee are very noticeably better. The water was a big change for me as well, which is now physics-based, and I loved it.
Even with it being more demanding than the old game, Yooka-Replaylee shows a lot of promise for playability on the Steam Deck. It kept to 45 FPS the entire time and felt quite smooth, with only those stutters when spinning and attacking changing that at all. Playtonic was not joking around when they said they were optimizing for the Deck this time, and I am elated to see it.
Yooka-Replaylee can be wishlisted ahead of its October 9th release date.

That's fantastic. The first demo played VERY poorly on the SteamDeck, so it's great to see they gave it some more attention in the intervening period.
looks like yet another heavily unoptimized game
How so? It looks and feels pretty good so far.
This game played amazing to me. It’s locked at 45 fps. You did say “looks” so why not try playing it first? Is this a troll comment Alex?
