Halloween: The Game Is Actually Playable on the Steam Deck

Asymmetrical horror games have always been dominated by a few titles, with the largest one being Dead by Daylight. Having to work together with friends to survive against a single boss-like enemy is extremely fun, but I’ve always been curious to see what other kinds of games might have a chance against it. Yesterday, one such game was released, Halloween: The Game. Based on the Halloween movies, one person controls Michael Myers, while the others work together to save as many people as they can.

From what I’ve played so far, it’s a lot of fun. I can see how enjoyable and dynamic the gameplay could be as the game goes on. However, I also noticed that it received the Steam Deck Unsupported badge, so I decided to test it for myself to see if it was really Unsupported.

According to Valve, it received this rating because the game couldn’t perform well on the Steam Deck and the graphical settings couldn’t be configured to fix it. I wanted to see if this was true, so I tested all four maps to see how they would all perform and whether or not the game was actually unplayable. Based on my experience, I would consider it playable apart from one map.

Almost every map in Halloween: The Game is able to hit 30 FPS and above without much issue on the lowest possible settings. It doesn’t look the greatest, but it’s still definitely playable. I was able to complete those matches without issue, and despite some pixelation from upscaling, it was still relatively enjoyable.

The one exception to that is the East Haddonfield map, where I was below 30 FPS in certain areas. There are some moments on all maps where the framer could drop slightly, like when dashing around in the darkness as Michael, but I would consider it more playable than not.

I haven’t played a ton of the game, so there might be something that I’m missing. However, based on my experience so far, I wouldn’t say it’s Unsupported. There are definitely compromises, but I was able to play at 30 FPS for the most part, and there were no issues with anti-cheat. I wouldn’t say it’s the best way to experience the game, but it’s definitely playable.
