Witchfire Gets Big New Patch With Dedicated Steam Deck Settings

Witchfire is quite possibly one of my favorite FPS games that I have played in a long time. I actually only bought the game today to test the newest update, but I found myself having trouble stopping. Developer The Astronauts found a great way to combine roguelike and souls-like elements into an addictive first-person shooter, and I was surprised by how great it is to play on the go.

The new update, which is the second-to-last one for its Early Access run, has some great changes. There have been a ton of changes here, but the one I want to focus on most is with the Steam Deck. The game finally got the Verified badge, and it does this with font scaling and a brand new dedicated performance profile/default graphical settings. Of course, I just had to check it out for myself, so I did just that.

For the most part, the new Steam Deck preset works pretty well. It will generally stay above 40 FPS, with some minor dips into the 30s. I saw the biggest drops in our hub, with some spots we look at going down to the 22 FPS range, but it never went down during expeditions and larger fights. I would say this can comfortably run at 40 FPS on expeditions based on what I have tested so far. There may be some areas or fights that take more power, but ultimately, I would consider this very playable.

With Witchfire feeling like a souls-like roguelike FPS, I am overjoyed at how well it's running, and praise the preset that The Astronauts have made. It runs much better than I expected, which is just great. I love that we can keep things more stable and still hit a higher framerate, and it looks gorgeous all throughout. I can't see myself playing this any other way now.

However, the update has so much more. Melee mechanics have been upgraded, Extraction has been overhauled with more foes, tougher skirmishes, and phenomena to make each expedition more dangerous, Surges to boost your own abilities, a huge new Vault, a shooting range with a Bestiary, more Fallen Preyers, more accessibility options for adusting font size and an Arachnophobia filter, a brand new calamity, and three new firearms. It's a lot to enjoy, so this is a great free update!
